The ViewBradford Review
A brightly coloured cafe which dishes out food with a global view.
The Venue
The first thing that strikes you about Le Cafe Bleu are the colours. First of all blue (obviously) and then a riot of violets, mustards yellows, greys and reds. The high stainless-steel counter and till are at the far end of this long, medium-sized, modern cafeteria.
There are spotlights in the white-panelled ceiling, a squiggly gold-framed mirror on a dark blue wall and a clock on the dark violet wall. There are a dozen or so tables including a rather cool and chic violet-coloured figure of eight table flanked by light grey free-standing padded benches.
There’s an upstairs area which is visually stunning, especially the colourful murals painted by an 18-year-old local artist who looks like he has a very, very bright future.
The furniture consists of red vinyl sofas, black bucket armchairs and low, funky tables. The ceiling is ornately patterned and there’s a good view of the street below.
The People
The colour scheme is meant to represent the cafe’s vision of a mix of different cultures, which has pretty much been achieved. It also has catering contracts with a couple of big companies in the area. And the widely travelled, abrasive owner adds his own unique, er, charm to the place.
The Food and Drink
The food here has Latin/world orientation and prices are kept in line; sandwiches cost only around £2.95 to £4. A BLT is £2.95, as is a roast chicken with pesto and tomatoes. Jacket potatoes are around £3.20 and a cottage cheese salad is £3.95 while a Thai chicken salad is £4.80.
You can get pizzas which are of the nine-inch, thin and crispy variety - a diablo (peppers, olives and jalapenos) is a fiver. They go big on pasta here too, and it’s £5.65 for a penne alla carbonara or £5.95 for a canelloni fiorentina. For something sweet there is apple pie, pecan pie and various types of patisserie.
To drink there’s fruit juices and smoothies, such as the tropical (orange, mango and pineapple) blend for £2.25 or the cranberry, raspberry and strawberry mix for £2.65. You can also get a bottle of beer for £2.25. House wine is £7.99 to £10.50 for a bottle and it’s £2.70 for a large glass of house wine.
The Last Word
With its inclusive rainbow coalition ethos coupled with its colourful and contemporary design, you’ll be in the pink at Le Cafe Bleu.
