The ViewBradford Review
This big, open-plan pub pumps out cheap booze and is on a prime spot on the city’s brave new Centenary Square.
The Venue
It's a Lloyds No 1 Bar which, if you didn't know, is owned by Wetherspoons, and in true Wetherspoons style the pub's name has some historic relationship with the area.
Turls Green was the name of the area which has since been taken over by the large, modern Centenary Square. It's so modern, in fact, that there's even a massive Big Brother-style screen showing 24-hour news. And if you want to listen to the booming hourly political updates, there's loads of outside seating.
Inside the pub the colours are yellows, purples, creams and metals. It's an open-plan, two-storey venue, but there are sections to it, courtesy of high-backed banquettes.
The flooring is black and seating is on padded stools and on fabric oatmeal-coloured high padded banches. On the right is the long, shiny, black-topped bar. There are the Wetherspoons regulation fruit machines and lots of plasma screens around the place.
Upstairs it’s got a similar look with some low two- and three-seater sofas in the window area with views on to the square (and that unavoidable screen).
The People
A mainstream crowd with an eye for a deal comes here — checked short-sleeved shirts outside the trousers for boys and skimpy tops for girls. The terrace is especially popular in the summer when it’s heaving on a Saturday afternoon/evening.
The Food and Drink
On tap there’s Fosters, Carling, Guinness, Stella, Heineken, Pedigree, Abbot Ale, Greene King IPA and John Smith’s (at £1.95 a pint). There are also alternating guest ales including beers from local breweries.
There’s the normal range of bottles including Budweiser, Becks, Corona, Peroni, Efes from Turkey and Polish lager Zywiec, which is £1.69 a bottle. There’s Fetzer wine on tap and, if you fancy a cocktail, you can get a pitcher of Woo Woo (vodka, Archers and cranberry juice) for £5.60.
Food is plentiful and won’t damage the pocket too much - a full English breakfast is £2.59 until midday every day and there’s an array of sandwiches, burgers, wraps, salads and jacket potatoes.
It’s a £3.49 for a club sandwich and you can get a five-bean chilli for £5.39. Thursday is curry night and on Tuesday you can get a grill (steak, gammon, salmon, pork) and a drink for £6.99.
The Last Word
A standard, big, open-plan, two-storey bar which gives the people what they want.
