With an almost unblemished reputation, The Fighting Cock stands proudly on its own with its array of fine drinks.

The Venue
The Fighting Cock’s reputation is such that, despite the fact it’s stuck out on its own in a rather desolate part of town, people flock here. It’s an old-looking brick and stone building on the corner with lots and lots of discarded steel beer kegs outside.

The original woodwork is painted in Rasta colours, although that’s probably unintentional, and it has original leaded windows.

Inside, it has a dark wood floor, white walls and a dark brown ceiling. It was a shop before it became an alehouse and finally got a spirits' licence in more recent times. It's split into three sections and the long dark wood slatted bar carries through all three.

There are free-standing bench type seats and high stools at the bar to sit on, as well as standard pub chairs and tables.

There’s a high ledge supporting rows of empty beer bottles as well as other knick-knacks and a big stone fireplace with a little iron stove in place of the fire. There’s a cosy little middle section and another room at the far end.

The People
You get a genuine mix of everyone here. It’s very popular at lunchtime with both the shirt-and-tie and sweatshirt-and-jeans crowds. Having said that, it’s actually pretty buzzing most of the time, whether during the afternoon, evening or at weekends.

The Food and Drink
On draught you’ve got Landlord (brewed at the Timothy Taylor Brewery in nearby Keighley), Erdinger, Veltin’s, Brakspeare, Lindeboom and Abbot Ale.

There's also an impressive array of real ales, including corkers from local and regional breweries such as Skipton’s Copper Dragon, Saltaire from West Yorkshire, the Glentworth Brewery in Doncaster and Bradford’s very own Salamander Brewery. Even the ciders are classy, from Biddenden’s Monks Delight to Weston’s Old Rosie.

In bottles, the selection is second to none with beers such as Austria’s Samichlaus which is rocket fuel at 14 per cent, Belgian brew Gulden Draak, Westmalle Tripel, Chimay Blonde, Delirium Tremens, Maisel’s Weisse, Maredsous, Duvel and Leffe Blonde and Brune.

To soak up all that alcohol there are sandwiches at around £2.70 to £3.90 and a chilli con carne with white or granary bread at £3.20. Yorkshire pudding with beef and gravy is £3 to £4 and you can get a ploughman’s lunch for £3.95.

The Last Word
A small drink-filled piece of utopia - could this be the perfect pub?
