The ViewBradford Review
Situated near to the university, Love Apple Cafe is probably the most progressive, arty space in the city. Love and cherish it.
The Venue
The Love Apple Cafe is a low-lying, white-painted building, perfectly placed near the college. It spreads itself thickly over bar, cafe and live music rooms.
The middle part is the bar, which has a small nest of armchairs, and the live music room at the far end is all a gig venue should be - a dark space with a low, arched wooden ceiling flanked by a sunken seating area.
The cafe bit at the other end is light, airy and modern with a white ceiling, pale flooring and creamy high-backed leather banquettes.
Walls are covered in framed photos, which are for sale, as well as posters, and there are leaflets publicising every arts event worth mentioning. There’s a scattering of tables and chairs outside too, and plants in the windowsill.
Let’s face it, not many places can get away with blasting out heavy Studio One dub in the middle of the day, but the Love Apple Cafe manages it. Top marks for the music selection.
The People
This is where you’ll find the trendy dudes and arty types hanging out, either drinking Erdinger in the bar or sipping a caffe latte in the cafe - not to mention the cool muso brigade who come in for the bands. They’re so laidback they’re almost falling over.
The Food and Drink
The food and drink reflects the local culture here perfectly with its alcohol and non-alcohol options and Asian/English menu.
You’ve got Warsteiner, Erdinger, Carlsberg, Strongbow and Budweiser on tap, as well as Dark Mild, and the wonderfully light and refreshing Cascade Pale Ale from the Saltaire brewery down the road.
Cocktails are £4.50 each and include White Russian, Cuba Libre and Woo Woo. A Love Apple Cherry is double cherry vodka with apple juice and a dash of soda.
There’s a laudable selection of whiskies and bourbons too, including the single malt, triple-distilled Scottish lowland Auchentoshan. And there are plenty of fruit juices and smoothies.
On the food front, as well as sandwiches, wraps, ciabattas, baked potatoes, bagels, breakfasts and nachos, there are chicken burritos for £8.75 and a Greek salad for £7.95.
A mirpuri darka daal is £5.95 and the chicken wrap is full of tender chunks of grilled chicken breast coated in mayo. And for afters try a slice of their moist and tasty passion cake slathered with vanilla icing. You can help yourself to the little bowl of love hearts are on the bar (there’s lots of free love here).
The Last Word
The Love Apple is everyone’s favourite bar. One bite and you’re smitten.
